Thanks Andy, glad you found the guide useful. Agree – there’s a lot to consider and it’s easy to get stung with a poor hosting company. Fortunately, a lot of the hosts are getting better and picking up their game, but not quite enough!
Almost all the services offer some sort of page builder that makes it easy to drag and drop to build your page. These are great for getting started, but they often lock you into the service. Most page builders are proprietary to the service, or don’t create HTML that’s portable enough to be easily moved to another service if you decide it’s necessary.
Besides choosing the type of web hosting you need, you’ll also need to decide whether you want your website hosted on a Windows-based system or a Linux-based system. In some cases, the needs of your website dictate the operating system you choose. If not, read on for an overview of the similarities and differences between the two options.
Linux is the most commonly-used operating system for web hosting in the world, and Linux servers are a popular choice for many websites and applications. It is the industry-standard operating system, and in fact, one of the most popular groups of applications used to back websites is commonly referred to as LAMP, which stands for Linux, Apache (a web server), MySQL (a database), and PHP.
GreenGeeks’ plan is among the more expensive web hosting plans we reviewed, but it offers some of the best features and performance. With a feature-filled control panel and high usability, it outranks most of the other web hosting services. In fact, its unlimited shared hosting package compares to the advanced business plans offered by competing web host providers. Additionally, it comes with every security tool you need to protect your site and customers.
After evaluating over 53 different web hosting companies for this guide, we were curious about WP Engine, who scored exceptionally well in a range of areas. Everything from uptime and server hardware quality to the average time it took their customer support to answer the phone was impressive.
Web Hosting is designed to serve the web hosting needs of small, independently owned and operated businesses in the United States. It is not appropriate to use our services to support large enterprises or internationally based businesses with a sustained demand that places undue burden on our systems or negatively impacts use by small, independently owned and operated businesses.
Once we accessed our accounts, we tested the dashboard of each service. The standard interface is called the cPanel, while some services, like iPage, use their own control panel, which allows for more customization. We evaluated which tools are available in the basic shared hosting plans, taking into account features like simple email creation, a disk-usage meter and access to create cron jobs. Many services in our lineup have the option to back up a site manually or utilize a one-click install section.

I would definitely recommend a dedicated server + CDN approach as it’ll be far superior, providing the CDN has a local data center. I believe Cloudflare have ones in Sydney and Singapore, which should do the trick.
Support. This is tricky to evaluate. Because the quality of support sometimes varies from one support representative to the next, we kindly ask you to share your experience in the comments section for your host. Unfortunately this also attracts fake comments (sometimes from competitors, sometimes from the hosts themselves). We try to moderate but we reckon this is not 100% failsafe.
Domain validation (DV) is the most affordable and most common option, and it’s free with all of our top picks. This level certificate indicates that the domain is valid and the applicant controls that domain. It’s easy to obtain and doesn’t require any paperwork. On a site with DV, you’ll see a green padlock in the browser bar. For most sites, this is plenty. (We use DV on Reviews.com.)
Each though – can be a tough one for choosing the correct ‘one’, for that person, whether, is for Pro/Professional use, active blog traffic ect, as so many other sites sadly have their own limitation issues, or mislead direction, until after investing that time to install, new domain name, then heavier traffic, or re-direct, plus sub-domains, overload if they offer an email service, extension also can be rough – even the design templates have found out those can limit, while each will offer their pro/con criteria based upon what interest and personal, professional use and services will become to that new page.
We have resources – CPU, memory, entry processes, I/O – at the ready for when you need them (we’ll alert you when you’re close.) Or you can really stay on top of things through our robust stats dashboard. Either way, leveling up is a one-click affair.
HostGator is one of the world’s top 10 largest web hosting companies with more than 8,000,000 hosted domains. We have over 850 employees to provide you superior around the clock support. We are the perfect choice whether you are looking for business, personal, or even Fortune 500 hosting.
WP Engine may not be the cheapest web hosting company, but they sure know a thing about keeping WordPress sites running smoothly. Ironically, they’re one of the very few web hosting companies that don’t talk about ‘99.99% uptime guarantees’, and yet they seem to have one of the best uptime track records.
A shared hosting plan is the most popular type for hosting a website. It’s very practical and affordable, which makes it a perfect choice for small business owners & individuals. We don’t want to get too technical, but a shared hosting account is basically hosted on a server that shares its resources (CPU, RAM, etc) among many different clients. Learn more
QUICK TIP: When running a newsletter for your business, it’s best practice to implement a double opt-in (also known as confirmed opt-in). This is where a new email address is only added to your mailing list after the subscriber clicks a confirmation link. This helps to ensure the subscriber really wanted to join your newsletter and makes for a quality mailing list. So check your email and confirm your subscription!
PJ Fancher (HostingAdvice.com): InMotion offers an excellent business-class shared hosting plan. While carrying a higher price tag than other cheap hosts, it has a very nice list of features to help justify the extra cost. For the IT crowd in the audience, you’ll appreciate SSH access, as… Go to full review »
We loved FastComet’s in-depth knowledge base, which includes both written guides and video tutorials. They cater equally well to people first setting up their website and to those with more advanced technical skill sets who are trying to troubleshoot specific issues.
PLEASE remove Freehostia!! I purchased a domain name from them but made some mistakes when filling out my ICANN information. I asked support personnel if they’d allow me to do correct it and they said NO, that I couldn’t correct any of my ICANN information and that I had basically forfeited my website! I contacted a representative at and she told me to go back to Freehostia and explain to them they were required to allow me to update my ICANN record and gave me the law which states I can do so. I gave that to Freehostia and STILL they refused to allow me to edit the information. I had to file a formal complaint with ICANN which is what the status is now. These people are CROOKS!!! If you’re reading this, please head this warning! They are completely and obviously unreasonable. You can’t refuse to give something to someone who purchased it from you!!
The US-based web hosting company is one of the largest in the game and probably the best known one as well. It is also the biggest domain name registrar in the world with tens of millions of domain names in its portfolio. GoDaddy’s cheapest web hosting package is decently kitted out at £4 per month excluding VAT (when you sign up for an annual subscription).
The majority of the hosts on our lineup use a standard cPanel and for good reason – it is the industry standard. While the dashboard isn’t much to look at, it provides useful tools to create a site, manage the hosting and market it to the online world.
